Besides these, there are also plenty of well-understood poisons and chemicals that cause all kinds of other health problems, from heart disease to gum disease.

Some carcinogens are found in the tobacco plant naturally and increase in concentration through the process of growing, curing, aging, and fermenting the tobacco leaves. Others are added because of the pesticides and chemicals used on tobacco plants, such as radioactive element polonium-210, which is common in tobacco fertilizer.

Will Quitting Lower the Risk of Cancer?

Even if you have been smoking for 40 years, it is still worthwhile to quit. The longer you stay away from tobacco products, the better your chances of avoiding cancer as well as the other diseases that are caused by smoking. And today there are more quitting smoking methods than ever.
