There are many, many suspected carcinogens found in tobacco products, however scientists have conducted testing and found conclusive evidence that there are 69 carcinogens in tobacco smoke. Besides these, there are also plenty of well-understood poisons and chemicals that cause all kinds of other health problems, from heart disease to gum disease.

Some carcinogens are found in the tobacco plant naturally and increase in concentration through the process of growing, curing, aging, and fermenting the tobacco leaves. Others are added because of the pesticides and chemicals used on tobacco plants, such as radioactive element polonium-210, which is common in tobacco fertilizer.
